Brooke Logs Nine Assists As RC Boys Lax Beats Titans

John Brooke tallied nine assists to lead the Rockbridge County High School boys lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over Hidden Valley in Lexington.

Brooke, a junior attackman, also scored one goal, totaling 10 points as the Wildcats (4-6) built up a big lead and held off a second-half rally from the Titans (1-9). Andrew Kelly notched four goals, one assist and a 21-of-26 mark on faceoffs for RC, and Jack Jensen recorded nine saves.

Eli Shartzer paced HV with five goals and one assist, and Abel Fitzgerald made 11 saves.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, getting three goals from Kelly along with a man-up goal and four assists from Brooke in the opening frame. The Titans got off the mark with a pair of extra-man goals to pull to within 6-2 midway through the second stanza, and they trailed 7-3 later in the period.

Man-up goals from Grayden Brown and Trenten Cash -- both assisted by Brooke -- helped RC extend its lead to 9-3 by the 7:05 mark of the third quarter. But a 5-2 stretch from HV got the visitors back into the game, and James Marra's extra-man marker made it 11-8 with eight minutes left in regulation.

The 'Cats countered with another man-up score, with Brooke again setting up Brown to push the margin to 12-8 with 5:35 to play. Quincy Speers scored from Brooke's ninth and final assist with 1:54 remaining to provide an extra bit of insurance.

Cash finished with two goals and one assist for the Wildcats, while Brown and Quincy Speers registered two goals apiece and Jackson Speers posted three caused turnovers. John Janiga had one goal and one assist for the Titans.

The teams combined for a whopping 23 penalties, leading to a slew of man-up chances. HV converted on 5-of-9 extra-man opportunities, while RC finished 5-of-10.

Prior to the game, RC honored its senior class: Daniel Grimm, Sawyer Hattersley, Jackson Speers and honorary captain Shanan Andrews.

RC will return to action on Monday, May 13 with a 5:30 p.m. road contest against Cave Spring.
