Friday, Jan. 4 – In an intense Valley District showdown, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team earned a hard-fought 56-53 win over Broadway on Friday night in Lexington.

Alex Balisteri led the Wildcats (7-5 overall, 2-2 district) with a career-high 27 points, making all five of his 3-pointers, 9-of-11 field goals, and 4-of-5 free throws. Balisteri also grabbed six rebounds and three steals. As a team, the Wildcats showed notable improvement in their free throw shooting, going 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the line.

Two of those free throws came with 19.7 seconds left in the game, when Jailik Lynch knocked down both to seal the win. Lynch scored eight points and led RC with eight rebounds and four assists.

The Wildcats trailed by three points with two minutes left, but a free throw from Balisteri and a 3-pointer from Caleb Walker put them up 54-53 to give them the lead for good.

The Gobblers (9-6, 2-3) used their size, strength and shooting ability to take a 27-24 lead into halftime, but RC outscored them 17-8 in the fourth quarter to go up by six, with Balisteri hitting three 3-pointers in the period. Helping Broadway battle back in the fourth quarter was Caleb Williams, who led the Gobblers with 23 points, sinking four 3-pointers and making all seven of his free throw attempts.

Other RC leaders were Harrison Hundley with seven points, Walker with six points and three steals, and Elijah Rogers with six points, going 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Aside from Williams, Broadway’s top scorers were Seth Keim with 19 points and Tyler Phares with six. Hundley played strong defense to hold Broadway scoring threat Benjamin Alderfer to three points.
