Friday, June 8 – Parry McCluer High School girls tennis doubles partners Maggie Patterson and Ashlen Hazelwood claimed the Class 1 state championship on Friday at Virginia Tech. This was the first state tennis title in school history for the Blues.

Patterson, a junior, and Hazelwood, a senior, came back from one set down after losing a tiebreaker in the opening set of the finals match. Patterson and Hazelwood ultimately prevailed 6-7 (2-7 tiebreak), 6-3, 6-2 against the Rappahannock County High School’s doubles team of Laura Ambrose and Mackenzie Straughan.

It was a long day of successful tennis for the Fighting Blues duo on the courts at Virginia Tech. Earlier Friday, Patterson and Hazewlood defeated J.I. Burton High School’s Kira Sturgill and Megan Dockery in a semifinal match, 6-2, 6-1.
