Thursday, April 11 – Both the Parry McCluer High School baseball and softball teams cruised to victories over Covington in Pioneer District action on Thursday in Buena Vista.

In baseball, the Fighting Blues (8-1 overall 2-0 district) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first two innings and earned an 11-1 win in six innings. The win showed the Blues’ improvement over last season, when they’d lost 12-2 in five innings at Covington. In softball, PM (7-2, 2-0) bolted to a 12-0 run in the first two innings and captured a 18-0 victory in five innings. Both games were shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Covington baseball team (3-3, 0-1) scored its only run in the first inning when Juan Miller ran home on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Blues answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, as Zach Claytor scored on a groundout hit by Marcellius Dawson before Jacob Bartley doubled on a fly ball to right field to drive in Matt Kiely and Tye Wheeler.

PM added two runs in the second, three in the third and three in the sixth. Kiely scored PM’s final run to clinch the win, batted in by Wheeler, who singled on a line drive to center field.

The Blues racked up 10 hits, led by Claytor with three, as he hit a single, a double and a triple. Austin Moore added two hits. Recording two RBIs each for PM were Claytor, Bartley and Dawson. Miller led Covington with two hits.

Claytor pitched all six innings for PM, striking out six and allowing five hits, two walks and one earned run. The Cougars went through four pitchers.

PM had a strong fielding day, committing no errors and preventing the Cougars from scoring when they had a runner on third. Covington had one error.

In softball, it was the third win in three days and the fourth consecutive victory for the Blues. PM (7-2, 2-0) earned road wins earlier in the week, defeating Riverheads 26-17 on Tuesday and beating Alleghany 12-4 on Wednesday.

Both PM teams are scheduled to continue district action at home against Bath County on Monday at 5 p.m.
