Blues Shut Out Rockets In Softball, 6-0

Friday, May 11 –The Parry McCluer High School softball team earned a 6-0 win over Pioneer District rival Craig County in the final home game of the regular season on Friday in Buena Vista.

With the win, the Fighting Blues (10-4 overall, 8-0 district) completed a sweep of the regular-season series with the Rockets (4-2, 3-2). When the teams met on April 12 at Craig County, PM won 10-6.

The Blues pitched and fielded well and scattered their runs across four innings.

In the first inning, PM’s Kate Beverley doubled and then scored on a grounder to left field by Peyton Mohler, who was tagged out while attempting to run for third base. Chloe Persinger singled with a grounder to center field, and Makenna Smith brought her home with a double on a fly ball to left field to give PM a 2-0 lead.

The Blues added their third run in the third, with Mohler hitting a double to left field and then scoring on a grounder to center field by Persinger.

PM made three quick outs in the top of the fourth, including a hustle by third baseman Taylor Thompson to grab a grounder and throw it Persinger at first base. After the Rockets changed pitchers in the bottom of the fourth, the Blues scored two more runs to take extend their lead to 5-0.

The Blues’ final run came in sixth. Mohler doubled with a fly ball to left field, advanced to third on a groundout, and ran home on a wild pitch.

PM amassed 12 hits against Craig pitchers Maggie Huffman and Hannah Taylor. Mohler led the Blues with four hits, including three doubles, Persinger recorded three hits, and Smith had two hits.

The Blues held the Rockets to five hits, led by Tierrney Zysk with two. On the mound for PM, Jayla Baker pitched the first 4.2 innings, striking out three and allowing three hits and no walks. In the final 2.1 innings, Persinger struck out two and permitted two hits and no walks.

The Blues will conclude the regular season with two district road games, at Bath County on Tuesday and at Narrows on Wednesday, with both contests starting at 5:30 p.m.
