Blues Win Baseball Opener Over Fleming, 7-5

Wednesday, March 13 – The Parry McCluer High School baseball team came back from a 4-1 deficit to win its season opener 7-5 over William Fleming on Wednesday in Buena Vista.

The Fighting Blues started their comeback in the bottom of the third when Zach Claytor singled on a fly ball to center field, Matt Kiely hit a grounder to left field, and Tye Wheeler drove in Claytor with a single on a line drive to center field. Keaton Coleman then singled on a grounder to bring home Kiely, cutting the Colonels’ lead to 4-3.

PM tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Kaleb Floyd scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Claytor, and Justin Wade gave PM a 5-4 lead when he scored on Kiely’s triple on a grounder to left field. 

After WF tied the game in the top of the sixth, the Blues scored the game’s final two runs on groundouts, with Wade and Austin Moore both crossing home plate. Moore had also scored on a groundout in the first.

Wade led the Blues with two hits, Kiely had a hit and three RBIs, and five other Blues registered one hit each. Jesse Hartsell led the Colonels with three hits. PM amassed eight hits, while WF had seven.

Pitching was also key to the Blues’ win. In five innings of relief, Claytor struck out six and allowed five hits, no walks and one unearned run. In the first two innings, Kiely struck out one and permitted two hits, four walks and four earned runs.

The Blues and Colonels will have a rematch at William Fleming on Monday at 5 p.m.
