Tuesday, April 9 -- Broadway handed Rockbridge County High School a 3-1 defeat in a Valley District girls soccer match in Lexington.

The Gobblers (7-1-1, 4-0-1 Valley) broke open a scoreless halftime deadlock with a three-goal outburst in the second stanza. Molly Hellwig tallied the lone goal for the Wildcats (1-5-1, 1-3-0), while Aly Huntsman made nine saves.

Broadway got on the board in the 42nd minute, when Faith Jones' sharp free kick from the left touchline deflected in off of an RC defender.

Another defensive miscue midway through the second half cost the Wildcats. Following a handball in the box, Ravyn Mongold converted the resulting penalty for a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

Hellwig pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, clanging in a shot off of the post after a great run up the right flank. But Jones finished off the match with just over a minute to go, firing in a 25-yard effort to secure all three points for the Gobblers.

Broadway outshot RC 19-9. Kristen Atwood recorded five stops in the winning effort for the Gobblers.

RC is slated to visit Turner Ashby on Friday, starting with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
