A Buena Vista woman was fatally shot in Rockbridge County Friday evening an incident that apparently started with a kidnapping of another woman in an attempt to lure the victim to the alleged shooter’s location.

The following report was released by the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office Friday evening.

Earlier today, around 5:39 p.m., the Rockbridge Regional Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a female was being held at gunpoint at a residence in the Collierstown area around the 1000 block of Hayslette Road.

Before deputies arrived, the suspect, Charles Leroy Holman, a 47 year old black male from Madison Heights, stole a vehicle and fled the scene.

A responding deputy was flagged down by citizens at a vehicle wreck on the 3600 block of Colliertown Road, approximately five miles from the Hayslette Road incident. The deputy found two females in the wrecked vehicle, one of which suffered from a gunshot wound. The deputy and a citizen began life saving measure. The female was transported to Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital but died from her wounds.  Christina Elizabeth Martin, a 38 year old female from Buena Vista, was identified as the decedent.

A Be On the Lookout was given out to surrounding jurisdictions for Holman and the stolen vehicle. A short time later, a Washington and Lee Public Safety Officer spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of their campus. An off-duty Rockbridge County Deputy spotted Holman abandon the stolen vehicle in the area of Advance Auto and flee on foot towards the Dollar General.

Deputies located Holman and contained him in the DMV parking lot.  After a short negotiation to get Holman to put down a firearm, deputies took him into custody without further incident.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that Martin and Holman had been involved in a domestic relationship. The original abduction of the other female appears to have been conducted by Holman in an attempt to lure Martin to his location. Martin fled the area once she discovered Holman’s presence. Holman pursued her and appears to have caused her to wreck before he shot her.

Holman has been charged with Second Degree Murder and is being held at the Rockbridge Regional Jail without bond. Future charges are expected as the investigation continues.
