Buena Vista Treasurer Landy Boatwright is retiring, effective, July 1.

Mayor Larry Tolley read a letter from Boatwright at the beginning of City Council's meeting Thursday in which the long-time treasurer announced her retirement.

In the letter, Boatwright thanked Council for its “fairness, courtesy and respect which has always been shown my office.” She also expressed her appreciation for her staff – Mary Lee Huffman, Karen Roberts and Amy Hudson. “Their hard work and dedication is evident as they always go above and beyond what is required,” she wrote. “I am truly blessed to have had the privilege to work with these wonderful ladies.”

In a separate letter to Tolley, Boatwright requested that Huffman be appointed to fill the remaining six months of her term. Boatwright's current four-year term expires at the end of this year. Huffman, who has worked in the treasurer's office 30 years, indicated Thursday she plans to be a candidate for treasurer in this year's election.

Boatwright, who has worked in the office for 34 years, has been treasurer for 23 years, since 1994.
