Saturday, Sept. 29 – The Rockbridge County High School football team overcame Valley District rival Turner Ashby 35-28 in double overtime on Saturday night, making clutch plays to seal the win at James Madison University’s Bridgeforth Stadium.

Ty Ruley rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats (4-2 overall, 2-0 district) ahead, and Austin Higgins then made an interception on a TA pass to seal the win.

In the first overtime, both teams had a chance to score, with the Wildcats stopping the Knights (2-4, 1-1) just shy of the end zone. When RC had the ball, Ruley was intercepted by TA’s Tyler Quick.

Ruley threw three TD passes, two to Jailik Lynch and one to Andy Schmidt. Johnny Dunn scored the Wildcats’ other TD on a 91-yard kickoff return. Grant Swinehart rushed for two TDs for TA, Quick ran for one. On a trick play 20 seconds into the game, Quick threw a screen pass to Trey Gillenwater, who passed to Samuel Quesenberry for an 81-yard TD.

The game, played on a turf field and ending at about 11:15 p.m., was the last of five games in the two-day Shenandoah Valley Football Classic at JMU, involving high school teams in the area.

The Wildcats will continue district action next Friday at 7 p.m. when they play host to Harrisonburg (3-3, 2-0), which beat Waynesboro 50-7 in the game preceding the RC-TA showdown.
