Friday, Jan. 12 -- Covington slipped by Parry McCluer High School 46-41 in a Pioneer District boys basketball matchup in Buena Vista.

Amir Young tallied a game-high 19 points for the Cougars (8-3, 3-0 Pioneer), and Covington held the Fighting Blues (3-8, 1-1) without a field goal for a stretch of more than seven minutes in the fourth quarter to escape with the victory.

Rob McCoy led PM with 13 points, while Zach Claytor totaled eight points, 12 rebounds and four assists, and Josh Chapman added six points and six boards. Kionte Barber notched 10 points for the Cougars, and K.J. Moore tallied nine points and nine rebounds.

The Blues took a 35-34 lead on Brant Adams' 3-pointer at the 7:28 mark of the fourth period. But PM would score just one point over the next seven minutes, allowing Covington to build up a 44-36 advantage with just 31 seconds to go. The Blues' lone field goal in the final 7-plus minutes came on McCoy's buzzer-beating heave that provided the final margin.

PM will take the court again at home on Monday against Bath County. The junior varsity game is slated for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
