Thursday, Sept. 13 – Rockbridge County High School senior Faerin Dick won the girls cross country race to lead the Wildcats to victory over Valley District rival Fort Defiance on Wednesday at the Virginia Horse Center, and the RC boys placed second of three teams.

With five of the top eight finisher, cheered by enthusiastic spectators on the sunny and warm afternoon, the Lady Wildcats scored 24 points to defeat Fort’s 31 in RC’s only home meet this season.

Dick finished the moderately hilly, recently redesigned 5-kilometer course in 22:11.16, gradually breaking away from the other lead girls to win by over a minute. Fort Defiance’s Sarah Moffett placed second of 16 runners in 23:27.72, and RC's Violet Jetton finished third in 23:34.36. The Wildcats were missing two of usual top five runners, as Sarah Torrence was out with a hip flexor and Aili Waller had a cold.

RC freshman Olivia Casey placed fifth in 25:18.76, and Jada Beck came in seventh in 25:37.67, and Karalynn Timmes (eighth, 25:43.77) clinched the team win. Wildcats following Timmes were Liesel Nelson (12th, 28:17.39) and Dreamer Coleman (15th, 32:51).

In the boys’ race, with five of the top eight finishers, Fort won with 23 points, with only 27 seconds from the Indians’ second through fifth runners. The Wildcats followed with 48 points, and district rival Harrisonburg (64) placed third.

RC senior Tieran McClure ran with Fort’s Jacob Jones for most of the race and led near the end until Jones caught him and won by a quarter of a second in a dogged sprint to the finish. Jones finished in 17:29.12, and McClure placed second of 55 runners in 17:29.37. Wildcat Josh Wawrzyniak placed third in 18:09.31.

The next runners in for the Wildcats were Cody Faust (15th, 20:10.34) and John Ryan Sedovy (16th, 20:11.45). Completing RC’s top seven were Pierson Hull (22nd, 21:23.83), Kyle Kendall (27th, 22:04.73) and Henry Worth (30th, 22:24.86).

Next up the Wildcats will race in the Clash With the Titans at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke on Saturday, Sept. 22.
