Friday, Jan. 5 – Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a 24-point halftime deficit, falling 85-47 to Valley District rival Broadway on Friday night in Lexington.

The Wildcats (4-8 overall, 0-4 district) jumped to a 5-1 lead, but Broadway (3-10, 2-3), the defending Group 3A state champion, went on a 14-0 run to take a 10-0 lead. Fueling the Gobblers, who graduated a few players from last year’s team, was Sarah Wimer. The lone Broadway senior led all players with 25 points and sank four 3-pointers, three in the first half. Broadway made 10 3-pointers on the night, while RC had seven.

The Gobblers used their defensive press to contain the Wildcats, and the visitors took a 41-17 lead into halftime. The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers in the game, and Broadway had 15 turnovers.

Midway through the third quarter, Emily Galford started a 12-2 run by the Wildcats to cut the lead to 16. Galford scored eight points in a row for RC, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers before making a steal and following with a layup. Before the quarter ended, Broadway made two triples to take a 56-34 lead into the final stanza. Galford led the Wildcats with 21 points, sinking five 3-pointers.

The momentum stayed with the Gobblers in the fourth quarter, as they continued to make shots and stop the Wildcats on defense, gradually increasing the lead. The Gobblers executed from the free throw line, making 73.9 percent (17-of-23) of their attempts, while the Wildcats shot 40 percent (6-of-15).

Aside from Wimer, Broadway’s leading scorers were Lindsey White with 14 points and Hannah Phares with 13. Other than Galford, RC’s leading scorers were Haley Cruze with nine points and Zoe Camden and Lyla Chittum with six points each.

The Wildcats will travel across the county to play at Parry McCluer on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
