Heat Assistance Available

Applications for Crisis Assistance from the Virginia Department of Social Services’ Energy Assistance Program are being accepted through Friday, March 15.

Crisis Assistance is designed to help households overcome energy emergencies that cannot be met by other resources. Families and individuals can apply by calling the Enterprise Customer Service Center at 1-855-635-4370.

Rockbridge Area Department of Social Services Director Kay Wrenn said locally, the number to call for help with heat is 463-7143.

“No Virginian should have to endure freezing temperatures without heat,” VDSS Commissioner Duke Storen said in a press release.

An energy emergency is determined when a household has no heat or is in imminent danger of being without heat, or if heating equipment is inoperable or unsafe. Forms of assistance vary, and could include payment of a security deposit for heat utility, purchase of home heating fuel, or payment of a primary heat utility bill, heating equipment repair, or supplemental heat.

To qualify, maximum gross income cannot exceed $1,316. For a household of four, the gross monthly income is $2,720. Last year, more than 66,000 households received assistance.
