J.B. "Benny" Lewis died April 11
James Benjamin "Benny" Lewis, Jr., 87, of Lexington died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Born, October 22, 1929 in Clifton Forge a son of the late James Benjamin Lewis, Sr. and Mattie Douglas Lewis.
Mr. Lewis graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in PA, he then continued his education at Echols College of Mortuary Science. Mr. Lewis was a veteran of the Korean War, and was one of the first black Greyhound drivers in this part of VA. He founded J.B. Lewis Funeral Service in the late 1950's, and started a long career of serving his community. He was a member of the city council, served a term as vice mayor, and sat on many boards. Mr. Lewis was selected as a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, and was a member of R.E. Lee Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his wife Mary Colbert Lewis; a son Aaron Lewis, and his wife Anita Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at noon Monday, April 17, 2017 at Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tom Crittenden officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Lexington. Family will receive friends for one hour prior to service.
