John Edward Stuckey, 76, of Charlottesville died of pancreatic cancer at Hospice House in Charlottesville on Nov. 3, 2018.

John was born in 1942 in Pittsburg, Kansas, and he received his bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Kansas. He joined the U.S. Information Service in 1964, serving in the Philippines and Thailand, but left because of his disagreement with U.S. policies in Southeast Asia.

After receiving his master of arts in political science from the University of Michigan in 1972, he and his family moved to Berlin so he could take a position at the Wissenschaftzentrum, using computers to conduct research in the social sciences. Upon their return to the U.S. in 1980, he began a career in academic computing, working at Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern, Washington and Lee University, and finally, after retiring from W&L, at the American University in Cairo, where he took a two-year position as Acting CTO.

John loved to travel and frequently took along his children with his former wife, Marsha Dutton. He also loved classical music, opera, Lotte Lenya's singing, Elmore Leonard novels, popcorn movies, The New Yorker, and reading in a variety of genres. He cared greatly about progressive politics and late in his life became a devoted fan of Rachel Maddow. He was witty, compassionate, and genuinely interested in other people’s perspectives and experiences. He will be missed by many people around the world.

John was preceded in death by his son Gregory and by his parents, John and Betty Lou. He is survived by his daughter, Emily, of Charlottesville; son, David of Budapest, Hungary; brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Stephanie, of Krum, Texas; and sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Michael McDaniel, of Alexandria.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Kamen Gallery at W&L, with visitation from 2 to 3.

Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, the ACLU, or the Lambda Legal Fund.
