John Valentine Berberich III, 88, of Charlottesville passed away peacefully at home with family on Monday, Feb. 13, 2017.
He loved God and Christian principles guided his daily life. In every way he was a patriot, good citizen and fine gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean (Sloan) and John Valentine Berberich Jr.; and his daughter, Jane Spruell Berberich.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the Rev. Gloria Kennedy Berberich; children, “Jake” IV (Dianne), Mary (Bob Miller), and David (Debra); and grandchildren, Madeline, Hannah (Paul McNulty), Arthur, “Jack” V and Michael.

John was born in Washington D.C. He had fond memories of being a Roosevelt High Rough Rider and was a proud member of Virginia Military Institute’s class of 50B. After graduation he earned his Professional Engineer’s and Land Surveyor’s licenses. John, in the VMI vernacular, was the consummate Citizen-Soldier having served the Commonwealth and various municipalities during his career: Virginia Department of Highways, City of Fredericksburg, City Manager of Lexington, Deputy Executive of Fairfax County, City of Alexandria and Deputy of Public Works for Charlottesville.
John loved spending summers at the cabin he built on the Maury River in Rockbridge Baths, reading, tending to his home, gardening and cooking. His barbecue chicken and pancakes were favorite menu items for family and visitors to his home he affectionately referred to as the “Hotel Evergreen”.
John will be missed by all his family, many friends and loving caregivers Ada and Lilly.  
A memorial service is planned at St Luke’s Simeon in Charlottesville on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at 11 a.m.
