Kate Webb Clary, 94, of Brownsburg died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family and pets on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017.

Born Aug. 11, 1923, in Saluda County, S.C., the youngest of eight children, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Webb, county clerk, and Bennie P. Griffith Webb, also of Saluda County.

Kate attended Saluda High School and graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, James Richard Clary Jr., of Newberry, S.C. They resided in Atlanta, Ga., rearing their four children while he grew his engineering business. They loved and enjoyed each other for 69 years until his death in 2014.

Kate moved with her two daughters to Brownsburg in 2012, and so enjoyed the pastoral views of the Shenandoah Valley, whether from her front porch, or being driven through the countryside.

Known for her beauty, quick wit, and graceful charm, Kate was loved and cherished by her family and friends. An avid reader and scrabble enthusiast, she possessed a zest for life and adventurous spirit, always jumping at the opportunity to travel and explore the world.

She is survived by her four children, J. Richard Clary III of Atlanta, Douglas W. Clary and wife Robin of Roanoke, and Carol Clary and Katrina Clary, both of Brownsburg; two grandsons, Stephen Clary and wife Allison, and Jason Clary, both of Roanoke; one great-granddaughter, Skylar Clary, daughter of Jason Clary; and numerous nieces and nephews residing in South Carolina, Florida and California.

A graveside service was conducted Thursday, Aug. 31, at New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Pastor Butch Grow officiating.

Arrangements were by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
