Saturday, Jan. 6 – The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team used balanced scoring and strong defense to coast past cross-county rival Rockbridge County 70-21 on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista. With the win, the Fighting Blues (6-1) completed a season sweep of the Wildcats (4-9). When the two teams met on Tuesday at RC, PM won 76-13.

The Blues applied their defensive press in the first half to force turnovers, and they knocked down shots, racing to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter and going up 46-7 at halftime. In the second half, the Blues switched to a half-court man-to-man defense before going to a 1-3-1 zone defense.

Helping the Wildcats exceed Tuesday’s point total was Jordan Dameron, sinking two three-pointers. Dameron scored all of her team-high eight points in the second half. PM’s lead continued to grow, though, as the Blues went up 65-14 at the end of the third quarter. RC outscored PM 7-5 in the fourth quarter, when the teams played with a running clock because the lead was 30 or more.

Madison Dunlap led the Blues with 15 points, and Kate Beverley added 12. Chipping in eight points each were Peyton Mohler, Allison Coleman and Emma Camden. Aside from Dameron, RC’s leading scorers were Kristen Bradley with four points and Emily Galford and Haley Cruze with three points each.

The Wildcats will return to Valley District play when they visit Turner Ashby on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., and the Blues will play host to Pioneer District foe Highland County at the same time.
