Friday, Jan. 12 – Struggling with turnovers and cold shooting, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 50-16 loss to Valley District rival Harrisonburg on Friday night in Lexington.

The Wildcats (4-11 overall, 0-6 district) came up empty in the first quarter, falling behind 13-0 against the tall and athletic Blue Streaks (10-4, 3-2), who played aggressive defense, often applying their press to force turnovers. RC committed 32 turnovers in the game, 19 in the first half. RC’s defense gave the Blue Streaks trouble at times, as Harrisonburg committed 24 turnovers.

The Blue Streaks led 17-0 before RC’s first basket when Emily Galford sank a 3-pointer about a minute and a half into the second quarter. Galford led the Wildcats with eight points, sinking two triples. Lyla Chittum made an inside shot off a rebound, but the Blue Streaks hit second-chance shots after offensive rebounds and led 27-5 at halftime.

Chittum scored inside at the start of the third quarter, and Haley Cruze hit a jump shot, but Harrisonburg’s Jakaya Brandon sank a 3-pointer, and the Blue Streaks gradually extended the lead. The third quarter was the best for the Wildcats, as they held Harrisonburg to nine points and trailed 36-11 at the end of the stanza.

The Blues Streaks stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the game. Galford made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 40-16, but Harrisonburg ended the game on a 10-0 run, preventing the Wildcats from scoring in the final four minutes.

Aside from Galford, RC’s top scorer was Chittum with six points. For Harrisonburg, Adaja Bender scored nine points and was a rebounding force, and Contance Komara added nine points. Chipping in eight points each were Katherine Hernandez-Guifarro, Lene Andrawas and Atilia Thomas.

The Wildcats will continue district play at home against Fort Defiance on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
