Tuesday, April 18 -- Maria Vargas converted a penalty kick in the waning moments of the second half as the Rockbridge County High School girls soccer team rallied past Staunton River 4-3 in Lexington.

The Wildcats (4-1-1) had tied the match with just over two minutes remaining, when Hailey Irvine collected McKenzie White's pinpoint diagonal cross and leveled the score at 3-3. Vargas then drew the foul that led to her winning spot kick, which came roughly one minute from the final whistle.

Irvine notched assists on the first two goals for RC, setting up Elsa Joyce's marker in just the second minute and delivering a corner kick that White headed home to make it 2-2 midway through the second half.

Nereida Torres, Abby Light and Jess Carreon all scored the for the Golden Eagles, with Carreon's 64th-minute tally standing to be the match-winner until the Wildcats pulled a rabbit out of their hat late on.

RC returns to action on Friday, when the Wildcats visit Lord Botetourt for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
