Memorial Day Field Of Memories Planned

Area residents will have the opportunity to honor friends, family and others who have served the country through military or community service by placing a flag in their name in a large display mounted on the lawn of the Hampton Inn Col Alto on Memorial Day weekend.

The 3-by-5-foot flags will fly around the clock from the afternoon of May 26 through May 29 at 5 p.m. A short Memorial Day program will be held at the display May 29 at 4:30 p.m.

A project of the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club, the “Memorial Day Field of Memories” also will raise funds for the club’s community service projects and financial support of local charitable organizations. A $50 donation will place a flag, with a placard attached describing the honoree, in the patriotic display.

“This is an opportunity to honor those living and past who served our country and community and touched our lives,” said Liz Moss, the Rotary Club’s president-elect. “It is also a way to honor nonmilitary family and friends who have given of themselves and influenced our lives.”

Moss emphasized that proceeds raised by the project are distributed to local charities and community organizations and to serve others.

“A flag in the ‘Memorial Day Field of Memories’ can recognize someone who has served in the military, or as a firefighter, police officer, emergency medical technician, or any other kind of service to others,” Moss said. “A flag also may be flown in recognition of a loved one or family friend.”

Creating a spectacular holiday sight for passersby, flags-placards will be assigned a grid location and cross-referenced by name, so that visitors to the display can tour the memorials and reflect on those honored, she said.

Flag reservation forms will be available online at the Rotary Club’s website,, or at Shenandoah Attic, 17th S. Main St., and Hess & Co. Jewelers, 22 S. Main St., both in downtown Lexington.
