Nationally Ranked W&L Women’s Lax Team Cruises, Lamb Steps Up For SVU Men In Regular-Season Finales

W&L Women Coast Past Randolph-Macon

The Washington and Lee University women’s lacrosse team, ranked second nationally in Division III, scored 12 first-half goals en route to coasting to a 14-2 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference for Randoph-Macon on Saturday at Watt Field in Lexington.

In winning their sixth consecutive game, the Generals (10-1 overall, 4-0 ODAC) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game and extended their lead to 12-1 by halftime. Senior midfielder Olivia Sisson led W&L with three goals, two assists and three caused turnovers. Junior attacker Jess Castelo added three goals and an assists, while senior attacker Hayley Soutter scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker won eight draw controls and added a goal and two assists.

In goal for W&L, freshman Elliot Gilbert played the first half and made one save, and junior Hannah Wiltshire played the second half and made five stops.           

Mary Castle scored both goals for Randolph-Macon (8-5, 5-1).

The Generals will continue ODAC action on Wednesday when they play at Shenandoah at 6 p.m.

Lamb Leads SVU Men’s Lax Team

Freshman attackman Shawn Lamb, a 2016 Rockbridge County High School graduate, led the Southern Virginia University men’s lacrosse team to a 19-12 nonconference road win over Virginia Wesleyan last Wednesday.

Lamb, an offensive leader throughout this season for the Knights (6-8 overall, 3-5 Capital Athletic Conference), scored five goals and dished out a career-high six assists.

Virginia Wesleyan led 6-2 after the first quarter and 10-5 at halftime, but SVU outscored the Marlins 14-2 in the second half.

SVU sophomore goalie Ian Arave played the final three quarters of the game, making 10 saves to aid the comeback.

The Knights then captured a 14-9 road win over Wesley College in CAC action on Saturday in their final regular-season game. Junior attackman Casey Rich led SVU with four goals and added two assists, and Lamb scored three goals and had one assist. In goal, Arave made 15 saves.

The CAC tournament will start on Wednesday, with SVU playing at Christopher Newport University at 4 p.m.
