Tuesday, May 15 – Showing progress made this season, the Parry McCluer High School girls soccer team challenged Pioneer District rival Bath County before falling 2-0 on Tuesday night at The Fields at Southern Virginia University. It was the Blues’ closest match of the season.

When the two teams met on April 19 at Bath County, the Fighting Blues (1-9 overall, 0-4 district) suffered a 9-1 loss in rainy conditions.

This time, the Blues held the Chargers (4-3, 2-1) scoreless for the entire first half, with strong goalkeeping by PM’s Madison Kirkpatrick and help from PM defenders. Kirkpatrick, a junior, made 16 saves in the match, surpassing the 100-save mark for her career. She now has 108 total saves. Bath goalkeeper Judith Hiner made five saves.

About two-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Bath’s Stephanie Gardener broke free for a straight-on goal to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

PM’s Celeste Doxey got a solid shot off shortly after, one of seven shots on goal in the match for the Blues, including one that went off the post.

Both teams got shots off as the half progressed, but play was stopped due to lightning with 17:04 to play. After the match resumed about 45 minutes later, Gardener scored from the right side to give Bath a 2-0 lead with 13:20 left. Bath got a three more shots off before the clock expired, and Kirkpatrick was on top of all of them.

After the match, the Blues, who have no seniors, honored two players who are leaving after this school year: German exchange student Julie Guenther and junior Grace Brotherson, who will be spending next year in Chile. Brotherson had a shot on goal against Bath.

The PM boys’ match against Bath County was scheduled to take place after the girls’ match, but it was canceled due to the late hour.

For their final match of the regular season, the PM boys will play host to Altavista in nondistrict action on Saturday at 10 a.m. The PM girls’ match against Altavista was canceled so that Altavista could prepare for its district tournament.

Both PM teams will play in the Pioneer District tournament next week, with the schedule to be determined. Check back here for updates.
