PM Girls Tennis Team Falls To Auburn In State Semifinals

Jonathan Schwab

Tuesday, June 5 – The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team’s historic postseason run concluded with a 5-2 loss to Auburn in the Class 1 state semifinals on Tuesday at the Southern Virginia University courts.

The Fighting Blues (13-2), who won the first regional title in program history and made their first-ever state tournament appearance, battled well, with five of the matches going to three sets. The Eagles (19-1) prevailed, as their consistent hitting and good ball placement helped them win four of the six singles matches and clinch the team victory at No. 3 doubles.

Winning in singles for the Blues were Ashlen Hazelwood at No. 2 and Sophie Dryden at No. 3, both in three sets. Hazelwood, who has signed to play college tennis at Shenandoah University, went undefeated in singles this season.

Auburn’s only loss this season was a 5-4 contest to the Blues in the Region 1C finals on Tuesday of last week at Virginia Tech. In the state finals, the Eagles will face Rappahannock County on Saturday at Virginia Tech.

The season will continue for Hazelwood and Maggie Patterson, who won the Region 1C doubles championship over host Auburn’s top doubles on May 23. In the state semifinals, the PM duo will face the top doubles team from J.I. Burton on at Virginia Tech on Friday at 9 a.m. If Hazelwood and Patterson win, they’ll play in the state finals at the same venue on Friday at noon.
