Thursday, Dec. 27 – The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team placed third of five teams at the 23rd annual Fighting Blue Craft Classic on Thursday in Buena Vista.

In their final home tournament of the season, the Fighting Blues won two of four duals and received a third-place trophy.

The Blues started with a 33-23 win over Covington before falling 57-15 to Alleghany, the winner of the tournament. PM then defeated Auburn 36-28. The Blues’ final dual went to a tiebreaker, with Franklin City captured 37-36, winning on criteria, with the most first points scored.

Alleghany, the largest school at the tournament, finished atop the field with 207 points. Franklin City placed second with 190, and PM followed with 120. Completing the standings were Covington (fourth, 89) and Auburn (fifth, 85).

Going undefeated for the Blues were Hayden Lawrence at 120-pounds and Trent Fitzgerald (160). Nick Craft (138) went 3-1, and Austin Moore (145) also wrestled well. The Blues were missing Sean Adkins (132), who was out sick.

The Craft Classic is named in honor of Mike Craft, who set a school record by leading the Blues to four regional wrestling championships in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Craft, now the principal at Rockbridge County High School, was at the tournament to watch.

The Blues will have their final competition of 2018 this Saturday when they travel to Buchanan for the Knights Invitational Duals at James River High School, with wrestling starting at 10 a.m.
