Rockbridge County High School senior Maria Vargas signed her letter of intent on Thursday to play Division I soccer for Virginia Military Institute, making her RC’s first female student-athlete to sign with VMI.

Vargas also became the Wildcats’ first female soccer player to sign with a Division I school. She will receive a scholarship from VMI and plans to study engineering. Joining Vargas at the signing table in the RC Commons were her parents, Albert and Stacey, while hundreds of students joined other family members, coaches, teammates, teachers and administrators to watch.

As a midfielder for the Wildcats’ soccer team, Vargas holds the school’s records for most career points (169) and goals (71), and she’s tied for the career assist record with 27. Last year, after leading the Wildcats’ to their winningest season ever at 9-6-1, Vargas was named Blue Ridge District player of the year and was selected to the Group 3A all-state first team, both firsts for RC. She is entering her fourth and final season on RC’s varsity soccer team, all under head coach Ray Ellington.

More coverage of Vargas’s signing will be in an upcoming issue of The News-Gazette.
