RC Boys Advance To District Semifinals By Defeating TA, 73-57

Saturday, Feb. 10 – The Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team earned a 73-57 win over Turner Ashby in the Valley District quarterfinals on Saturday night in Lexington.

The third-seeded Wildcats (14-9 overall, 6-6 district) advanced to the district semifinals, which will be at the home of second-seeded Broadway on Monday, with the game time to be determined.

Against sixth-seeded TA (5-18, 0-12), RC broke away from a four-point game at the end of the first quarter, applying pressure defense and going on a 14-2 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter. The Wildcats built up a 41-24 halftime lead. Guiding RC was Jailik Lynch, who scored 12 points in the first half, on his way to leading all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Lynch made four 3-pointers and added 11 assists and five rebounds.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 20 points midway through the third quarter and went into the fourth quarter with a 60-45 advantage. TA made small runs in the fourth quarter but got no closer.

Aside from Lynch, RC’s leaders were Alex Balisteri with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists; Harrison Hundley with 13 points and four boards, Nathan Bailey with nine points and four rebounds, and Triniti Stores with 12 rebounds and eight points. Eli Roeschley led the Knights with 15 points, and Alex Shipe chipped in 10 points.

The Wildcats shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field, 40 percent (8-of-20) from 3-point range, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line.

The semifinal winners will advance to the district finals at Spotswood on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. and will clinch a berth in the Region 3C tournament.
