Thursday, Feb. 1 – The Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team staved off a comeback by Riverheads to capture a 72-65 win in nondistrict action on Thursday night in Lexington.

With the win, the Wildcats (12-8) avenged a 51-43 loss to the Gladiators (8-12) at Riverheads on Jan. 18.

Riverheads got off to a strong start, using sharp 3-point shooting to lead by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the Wildcats picked up their shooting and defense to take a 34-31 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats started the second half by forcing two turnovers and scoring five points off them. After a 12-2 run that included a 3-pointer apiece from Nathan Bailey and Harrison Hundley, RC led 46-33.

Riverheads would battle back, thanks to 3-pointers on consecutive possessions from Grant Painter, and a pair of triples by Braeson Fulton cut RC’s lead to 54-51 with a minute left in the third quarter. The Gladiators would get no closer, though, as the Wildcats traded shots with them throughout the fourth quarter. Bailey, Hundley and Triniti Stores combined to seal the win at the free throw line in the final 70 seconds.

Hundley led RC with 21 points, sinking three 3-pointers, Bailey also hit three triples on his way to 15 points, and Jailik Lynch scored 14 points and dished out four assists. Stores pulled down 18 rebounds to go along with five points. Fulton led the Gladiators with 21 points and Painter added 19 points, with each of them making three 3-pointers. Drew Bond chipped in 12 points for Riverheads.

The Gladiators committed 15 turnovers, while RC had seven.

The Wildcats will return to Valley District action on Friday when they visit Turner Ashby, starting with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m. RC will conclude the regular season at home against Harrisonburg on Tuesday, with JV action starting at 5:30 p.m. Before the game, the Wildcats will honor their six seasons.
