Monday, Jan. 21 – After testing Valley District leader Spotswood in the first half, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team fell 52-36 on Monday night in Lexington.

The Wildcats (11-7 overall, 4-4 district), dressing only seven players, started the game well, ending the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. Helping fuel that run were Caleb Walker and Aaron Plogger, who each sank a 3-pointer.

Spotswood (14-2, 8-0) battled back to take a 24-23 lead into halftime, and the Blazers carried the momentum into the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run to start the period. Turnovers by the Wildcats resulted in transition baskets by the Blazers, and Spotswood, with a deeper bench, stretched its lead to 13 early in the fourth quarter. For the game, the Wildcats committed 25 turnovers. The Wildcats cut into the lead slightly, but Spotswood pulled away at the end.

The game was much more competitive when the two teams met at Spotswood on Dec. 18, with the Blazers winning the first showdown 85-45.

On Monday, Walker led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, teammate Aaron Plogger added 10 points, and Elijah Rogers led the Wildcats with 10 rebounds. Jailik Lynch made three steals to help a strong defensive effort for RC, but he got into foul trouble and was held to four points.

Angelo Pacheco-Ortiz, Spotswood’s 6-foot-6-inch forward, led the visitors with 12 points, and Robert Smith added 10.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday when they play host to Alleghany at 7 p.m. to cap off the rescheduled second day of the sixth annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout.
