Friday, Feb. 8 – In the quarterfinals of the Valley District tournament, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered a 42-40 loss to Fort Defiance on Friday night in Lexington.

The third-seeded Wildcats (13-10), who had beaten the sixth-seeded Indians (2-21) twice during the regular season, led for most of the game, but Fort made seven 3-pointers and came back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit.

The Wildcats were up 40-33 with just over five minutes left, but Fort went on a 7-0 run, during which Vincent Sipe hit one of his four 3-pointers. Fort passed the basketball around for most of the final minute, and Ryan Cook made a quick move for a layup to put the Indians up by two with 1.8 seconds left. After two timeouts, the Wildcats got the ball to Harrison Hundley, whose final shot missed.

Aaron Plogger led RC with 10 points, Caleb Walker added nine points and five rebounds, Hundley scored eight points, and Jailik Lynch had six points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Sipe led Fort with 15 points, while Clayton Kershner added 11 points, sinking three 3-pointers. Devon Simonetti chipped in nine points, and Cook added seven.

Fort will travel to play second-seeded Broadway on Monday.

Because they finished the regular season among the top three teams in the district, the Wildcats will advance to the Region 3C tournament, which will start the week of Feb. 18. The date, time, opponent and location of the quarterfinals will be posted after they're announced.
