RC Boys Swimmers Place Second At Regional Meet, Girls Fourth

The Rockbridge County High School boys swimming team placed second of 11 teams at the Region 3C meet, while the RC girls finished fourth on Saturday at Fork Union Military Academy.

RC will now gear up for the Group 3A state meet this Friday at the SwimRVA Collegiate School Aquatics Center in Richmond. If not already qualified by time, the top five individuals and top four relay teams from the regional meet advanced to the state meet.

Scoring 90 points, the RC boys finished behind only Western Albemarle’s 159 in the standings. Completing the top five were Spotswood (85), Brookville (76) and Turner Ashby (76). Western Albermarle won the girls meet with 165 points, and Monticello (103) finished second. Rounding out the top five were Fluvanna County (72), RC (71) and Brooville (70). Prior to the regional meet, both the RC boys and girls teams were undefeated.

From the regional meet, if not already qualified by time, the top five individuals and top four relay teams will advance to the Group 3A state meet.

The RC boys qualified three individuals and one relay for the state meet, while the RC girls have qualified three individuals and all three relays.

For the Wildcat boys, junior Grant Schwarzmann qualified in two individual races: the 50-meter freestyle, which he won in 25.77 seconds, and the 100-meter butterfly, placing fourth in 1:02.92. Senior captain Trey Williams senior captain advanced in two individual races, placing third in both: the 400-meter freestyle (4:36.94) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:04.93). Junior Garrison Drake qualified in the 200-meter freestyle (third, 2:12.78).

 The RC boys qualified in the 200-meter medley relay by placing third in 1:59.6. Team members were Williams, Schwarzmann, Charlie Hepner and Tal Gibbs. The Wildcats also advanced in the 400-meter freestyle relay, placing second in 3:58.22, with team members Drake, Hepnter, Schwarzmann and Gibbs.

For the girls, Petra Cipolla, RC’s junior exchange student from Italy, won two races, the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.94) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:03.96). Junior co-captain Allison Gigante advanced in the 100-meter breaststroke (fifth, 1:25.18), and freshman Olivia Abbott-Havers qualified in the 100-meter freestyle (fourth, 1:05.95).

The RC girls had already qualified all three relays (200 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle) for the state meet by time. Their best relay on Saturday was the 400-meter freestyle relay, with the Wildcats placing third in 4:22.17. Team members were Abbott-Havers, Gigante, Cipolla and Isabel Pfaff. In the 200-meter medley relay, the Wildcats placed fourth in 2:12.54, with team members Pfaff, Gigante, Cipolla and Liliana Vargas.
