RC Girls Defeat Glass 40-31 For Season’s First Hoops Win

Tuesday, Nov. 28 – The Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team captured its first win of the season, beating E.C. Glass 40-31 on Tuesday in Lexington.

Emily Galford led the Wildcats (1-1), who never trailed, with 15 points, sinking four 3-pointers, including two in the first quarter that helped RC jump to a 10-2 lead.

RC led 12-3 after the first quarter and were up 20-13 at halftime. The Hilltoppers (0-1) cut the lead to five in the third quarter, fueled by a 3-pointer and a free throw by Mya Hamlet, who led Glass with 12 points. An inside basket by RC’s Lyla Chittum and another triple by Galford extended the Wildcats’ lead to 27-17. Glass made several free throws to cut the lead to 29-23 by the end of the quarter.

The Wildcats went back up by 10 points about three minutes fourth quarter, on a putback by Chittum. Glass cut the lead to five points, but a pair of free throws by Zoe Camden and an inside basket by Cruze off a pass form Camden put the game away.

In addition to her scoring, Galford also had three steals and was a key part of RC’s strong man-to-man defense, which helped force 27 turnovers. The Wildcats also committed 27 turnovers.

Aside from Galford, RC’s top scorers were Chittum with seven points and Camden and Cruze with six each. Cruze led RC with 10 rebounds.

Other than Hamlet, Glass’s leading scorers were Lakayla Rucker with six points and Davina Napper, Kadejah Robinson, J’anaria Davis and Skylar Power with three points each.

The Wildcats will begin a five-game road stretch at James River on Thursday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
