RC Girls Hoops Comeback Falls Short Against Fort, 57-51

Monday, Feb. 4 – In a game that was close most of the way, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team came up short 57-51 to Fort Defiance in Valley District action on Monday night at RC.

The Wildcats (6-15 overall, 1-10 district), coming up their first district win on Friday, played the Indians (13-7, 9-2) much more competitively than when the teams met at Fort on Jan. 15. In the earlier contest, RC struggled to make shot, and Fort cruised to a 70-40 win.

In Monday’s game, RC jumped to a 10-5 lead before Fort battled back to take a 16-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Late in the half, Fort’s MaKayla Kershner made two of her four 3-pointers to extend Fort’s lead to 34-30 at the break.

The Indians stretched their lead to 12 early in the forth quarter, but RC battled back. Kessa Hall energized the Wildcats by taking her second charge, and RC cut the lead to five when Hall hit a 3-pointer with about 2:20 left. The lead would not get any smaller, though, and Fort put the game away at the free throw line.

Jorden Dunn led RC with 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Emily Galford added 10 points and six assists, sinking two 3-pointers. Graceon Armstrong scored nine points, including a 3-pointer, and led RC with 17 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Hall added seven points, sinking two 3-pointers and taking two charges.

Kiersten Ransome led Fort with 15 points, Kershner added 12, and Lilian Berry chipped in eight.

The Wildcats will conclude the regular season with a district home game tomorrow, Tuesday, against Harrisonburg. The night will start with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. Before the varsity game, the Wildcats will honor Dunn, their lone senior.
