RC Girls Soccer Upsets Spotswood On PKs

Tuesday, May 14 -- Sixth-seeded Rockbridge County High School upset third-seeded Spotswood on a penalty kick shootout in the Valley District girls soccer quarterfinals in Penn Laird.

The Wildcats (4-12-1) won the shootout 3-2 following a 3-3 stalemate through double overtime with the Trailblazers (5-11-1).

Molly Hellwig tallied a goal and an assist in regulation for the Wildcats. Hailey Irvine and Malorie Harris also scored, while Erin Harrington notched one assist. Aly Huntsman made 13 saves for RC, including a season-saving stop on a breakaway chance for Spotswood with 10 seconds left in the final overtime period.

Liliana Vargas and Hellwig converted from the spot in the shootout, and Harris then fired home the winning PK.

RC will visit second-seeded Waynesboro in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
