RC Golfers, Grace Huffman Win Regional Tournament

Jonathan Schwab

Monday, Oct. 2 –The Rockbridge County High School golf team won the Region 3C tournament, and RC’s Grace Huffman was the individual winner on Monday at The Club at Ironwood in Staunton.

With the victory, the Wildcats earned a trip to the Group 3A state tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. The top five individuals not on the winning team also advanced. Only four teams will play in the state tournament.

The Wildcats came through with clutch playing in difficult course conditions, as the lack of rain in the last month made the greens dry and couldn’t stop the balls from rolling back on the fairway. The players also had to play from the longer tee boxes.

RC tallied a 327 for the regional title, the school’s first since 2011 and the first under sixth-year head coach David Miller, who was named Region 3C coach of the year. Broadway placed second of eight teams with a 335, and Western Albemarle (342) finished third. Completing the standings were Monticello (346), Rustburg (357), Spotswood (359), Fort Defiance (364) and Liberty (415).

Huffman, who was named Region 3C player of the year, won by firing a 75 on the 18-hole, par-71 course. The Wildcats’ senior co-captain made her first ever eagle in competition and playing well the whole day. Fort Defiance’s Christian Michael placed second with a 78.

RC’s second scorer was senior co-captain Trey Cathcart, firing an 83. Teammate Cole Higgins carded an 84, and Wildcats Cole Cathcart, Noah Gyscek and Garrett Huffman all shot 85.

A photo of the Wildcats and results from this week and last will be in this Wednesday’s newspaper. For the full story on the regional tournament, please see our Oct. 11 newspaper.
