Tuesday, Sept. 12 – Showing no signs of rust after nearly two weeks without a full match, the Rockbridge County High School golf team won its seventh consecutive match on Tuesday at the Lexington Golf and Country Club.

The contest was the second of three 18-hole Valley District matches that help determine which teams will advance to the Region C tournament on Oct. 2. The Wildcats have already clinched a spot because of their regular-season results. It was RC’s first complete match since Aug. 30 because last week’s match at Botetourt Country Club was stopped due to rain.

Despite playing in off-and-on rain for about half of the afternoon Tuesday, the Wildcats tallied a 308, beating their Aug. 2 18-hole score by 14 strokes. Broadway, which had defeated RC on Aug. 2, placed second of seven teams with a 318. Completing the standings were Fort Defiance (343), Spotswood (345), Harrisonburg (372), Turner Ashby (378) and Waynesboro (411).

Fort’s Christian Michael was the medalist, firing a 72 on the par-71 course. Trey Cathcart and Grace Huffman led RC, shooting 73 to tie Broadway’s Seth Smallwood for second place of 39 golfers.

Cole Higgins and Cole Cathcart both fired 81 to tie for sixth place, completing RC’s team scoring. Also competing for the Wildcats were Garrett Huffman (84) and Will McClung (85).

The Wildcats will play host to Spotswood on Wednesday for a nine-hole match, scheduled for 4 p.m. RC’s final home match of the season will be a nine-hole contest against Broadway on Monday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m.to determine the regular-season champion. The final 18-hole district match will be on Monday, Sept. 25, at Broadway.
