RC Netmen Advance To Regionals

Wednesday, May 16 –The Rockbridge County High School boys tennis team earned a berth in the Region 3C tournament by defeating Spotswood 5-0 in the Valley District third-place match last Wednesday at the Lexington Country Club courts.

Following a 5-4 semifinal loss to Turner Ashby that took over seven hours to complete the night before, the second-seeded Wildcats (13-4 overall, 9-2 district) took under four hours to take down the fourth-seeded Blazers. All matches were decided in two sets. Since the final team result was determined, the teams did not complete the No. 6 singles match or the doubles matches.

Reflecting on the match, RC head coach Holden Branham said, “I like the way our guys came out fighting, after a long tough loss to Turner Ashby the night before.”

In last Tuesday’s semifinal loss to third-seeded TA, also at the Lexington Country Club, courts, the teams endured a blackout late in the night.

The contest came down to the No. 2 doubles match. TA’s Joe Satterwhite and Chase Blair were leading Gabe Slayton and Dawson Kosmas 5-4 in the third set, and the score was 30-30 when the lights, on a timer, went off at 10 p.m. Branham made a phone call, and, about 30 minutes later, the match resumed after the players warmed up. The TA duo, skilled at putting away overheads, took just two points to finish the match.

“The match was the longest I’ve seen,” Branham said. “We had our chances to win, and we just couldn’t finish. Our younger players learned just how long a three-set match can really go.”

In the district finals last Wednesday, TA went on to upset top seed Waynesboro 5-4.

The Region 3C team tournament will take place next week, with the date, time and opponent of the first-round match to be determined.

Shane Kearney has advanced to the district singles finals, and he and Noah Gyscek have have advanced to the district doubles finals. Both will play today at the Augusta Medical Center.

The Parry McCluer High School boys tennis team, who did not have a match last week, will conclude the regular season with a Pioneer District match at Narrows today at 5:30 p.m. The Blues are scheduled to compete in the regional tournament on Monday, with the date, time and opponent to be determined.
