Tuesday, April 10 – Facing an undefeated opponent, the Rockbridge County High School softball team lost 10-0 in six innings to Valley District rival Broadway on Thursday in Lexington.

The Wildcats (3-2 overall, 0-2 district) struggled against the pitching of Emily Campbell and Taylor Hopkins. Campbell pitched the first four innings for Broadway (6-0, 4-0), striking out five and allowing just three hits and one walk. In the final two innings, Hopkins struck out four and permitted no hits and one walk.

Broadway, which has consistently made the Group 3A state semifinals for the last few years, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Sarah Wimer hit a two-run home run over the center field fence. In the second, the Gobblers added three more runs to extend their lead to 5-0, scoring one on a double to right field by Wimer and adding two more on a double to center field by Sierra Lantz.

The Wildcats had their best chance of scoring in the third when Elisha Hayslett doubled to right field and then advanced to third base on a groundout, but the Gobblers ended the inning with a groundout.

Wimer brought in another run for Broadway in the fourth when she doubled to right field. The Gobblers had some trouble against RC’s Paige Clark, who pitched the final four innings, but Broadway took advantage of an RC error in the sixth and loaded the bases. Broadway then scored four more runs: one on a grounder by Lantz, two on a double to left center field by Campbell, and one on a line drive to left field by Grace Fravel.

On the mound for RC, Kennedy Clemmer pitched the first two innings, striking out one and allowing eight hits, no walks and five runs. In the final four innings, Clark struck out two and allowed four hits, three walks and five runs.

Wimer led Broadway with three hits and four RBIs. Registering one hit each for RC were Hayslett, Lyla Chittum and Tristan Ayers.

Next up the Wildcats will play a nondistrict game on Wednesday at Lord Botetourt at 5 p.m.
