Saturday, Dec. 2 – With four individual titles, the Rockbridge County High School wrestling team opened the season by winning the eighth annual Shumaker Classic on Friday and Saturday at Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista.

For the second consecutive year, the Wildcats took first place in the tournament, named for former Natural Bridge High School head coach Bruce Shumaker, who gave out medals to the top four wrestlers in each weight class.

Winning individual titles and going undefeated for RC were seniors Kage Tomlin (170-pounds) and Anderson Huger (182), sophomore John Ryan Sedovy (160) and freshman Seth Youngblood (145). On Friday, Tomlin earned his 100th career win.

PM, which competed without several wrestlers because they didn’t pass the hydration test, placed 10th of 13 teams. The Blues had three wrestlers place first in their weight classes: junior Hayden Lawrence (120) and seniors Andreas Davis (132) and John Fitzgerald (152).

The Wildcats and Blues will meet again in a dual tournament on Tuesday at RC at 6 p.m., with James River and Robert E. Lee also competing.
