For the first time in school history, the Rockbridge County High School girls indoor track and field team won the Conference 31 Meet school on Friday and Saturday at Heritage High School in Lynchburg.

With four individual championships and two relay titles, the Wildcats finished with 129 points. Last year, RC placed second. Following RC in the six-team standings at this year’s conference meet were Lord Botetourt (119), Staunton River (93), Northside (47), Magna Vista (43) and Alleghany (2).

“We knew going into this meet that LB would be our top competitor,” said RC head coach Jennifer Showalter. “After looking at the performance list pre-meet, we knew who needed to place higher in certain events. The girls came to win. They poured their heart and soul into this meet. …It took a tem effort to win, from field events, sprints and distance races.”

Showalter was named conference coach of the year for girls teams.

The small RC boys team placed sixth of six teams, but two individuals and one relay team qualified for the 3A West Region Meet.

If not already qualified by time or distance, the top six in each individual event and the top three relays advanced to the regional meet.

For the girls, Danielle Crawford won the shot put with a personal-record (PR) throw of 35 feet, 3 inches. Aili Waller captured the 1,000-meter run in a PR 3:27.32. Mallory Keeley won the mile in 5:57.57, and Rebekah Berry took first in the triple jump with a PR of 32-4.75.

The RC girls won the 4 X 400-meter relay in 4.44.9 seconds, about 15 seconds ahead of runner-up SR. Team members were Berry, Emma Faust, Tiffany Mohler and Kacie Shifflett. In the 4 X 800-meter relay, the Wildcats won by nearly a minute in 11:01.06, with team members Keeley, Waller, Shifflett and Mohler.

Berry also qualified in the 300-meter dash, placing second in 46.22 seconds, and in the long jump, finishing third with a leap of 15-6.5.

Sophia Youngdahl advanced in three individual events: the triple jump (third, 28-8), the 55-meter dash (fourth, 8.05 seconds) and the long jump (sixth, 14-6).

The RC girls had two qualifiers in the 500-meter dash, Mohler (second, 1:34.24) and Faust (third, 1:36.95).

In the mile, Shifflett (fourth, 6:05.47) and Faerin Dick (sixth, 6:13.77) advanced. Heading to regionals in the 2-miel will be Dick (second, 13:54.6) and Laura Smith (fourth, 14:02.56).

Joining Crawford in the shot put will be Ashley Mohler (fourth, 27-6).

Two Lady Wildcats advanced in the high jump, freshman Halyena Hamilton (fourth, PR 4-8) and Faust (sixth, 4-2).

SR won the boys meet with 149 points, followed by LB (124), Alleghany (57), Northside (43), MV (39) and RC (13).

The boys 4 X 800-meter relay team advanced by placing second in 9:33.36.

The regional meet will take place on Friday and Saturday at Heritage High School. If not already qualified by time or distance, the top six in each individual event and top three in each relay will advance to the Group 3A state meet.
