Rock the Ribbon: RC Boys Hold Off Draft, 86-84
Saturday, Jan. 21 -- Ty Bennett scored a tournament-record 36 points as the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team fended off Stuarts Draft for an 86-84 win in the final game of the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout on the Wildcats' homecourt.
Bennett finished 13-of-20 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line in setting a new scoring mark for the four-year-old event, and he also pulled down 13 rebounds. Nathan Bailey added 15 points for RC (8-8), while Jalik Lynch tallied nine points and nine assists.
John Gumann scored 19 points for the Cougars, while Jon Paul Rader notched 18 markers and Carson Peck totaled 16.
The Wildcats, who led 38-30 at the break, scored the first eight points of the third quarter to open up a 46-30 advantage. Draft battled back to pull within one point on three separate occasions in the fourth period, but the 'Cats held off the rally to win the Rock the Ribbon nightcap.
RC returns to action with a Blue Ridge District matchup against Lord Botetourt on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
