Ruth Audrey Brooks Roth, 93 of Roanoke, formerly of Lexington, died Feb. 14, at Raleigh Court Healthcare Center.

The daughter of Frederick A. and Gertrude Cain Brooks, she was predeceased by her parents, her sister, June Brooks, and her husband of 62 years, George Leith Roth.  She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Riley and Jane Baugh; sons-in-law Alan Riley and Thomas Baugh; grandchildren Margaret and Michael Riley; brother- and sister-in-law Robert and Nancy Roth; and nephews Christopher and Michael Roth.

Born in Brooklyn and reared on Long Island, Ruth’s first foray south was to attend The College of William and Mary, from which she graduated in 1944.  Graduate school at Columbia University and jobs in New York and Massachusetts followed, and she returned to Virginia to teach at Southern Seminary in 1951. The following April, she went on a blind date with George Roth, and they married that August.

Ruth loved her life in Lexington, where she was a dedicated volunteer, teaching at The Little School and serving as a docent at the Stonewall Jackson House.  At R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, she sang in the choir, made plum puddings and worked with the bazaar decorations committee. She was a member and past president of The Ignorance Club, and she wowed the crowd in a one-shouldered, white column evening gown at a VMI Faculty Wives Club fashion show.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Ruth’s honor to the George Roth Music Fund of R.E. Lee Church, 123 W. Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or the Rockbridge SPCA, 10 Animal Place, Lexington, VA  24450.  Online condolences may be sent to www.oakeys.com
