Monday, Sept. 11 – Overcoming a flat start, the Rockbridge County High School volleyball team defeated Amherst County 3-0 in nondistrict action to remain unbeaten on Monday in Lexington.

With the 26-24, 25-16, 25-14 win, the Wildcats improved to 6-0 and completed a sweep of the season series against Amherst (3-4). In their previous meeting on Aug. 24 at Amherst, the Wildcats won 3-1.

In the first set, the tall, athletic Lancers returned the ball well and jumped to a 10-5 lead. The Wildcats battled back to cut the lead to one, but Amherst used strong serving and net play to go up 18-12. The Wildcats responded by winning several long rallies and serving and volleying well to tie the set at 19-19. After several ties, Amherst went up 24-22. RC battled back, with kills by Jaydyn Clemmer and Hannah Berlin, and the Wildcats won the last four points of the set.

The Wildcats carried the momentum into the second set, racing to a 10-2 lead. Amherst would cut the lead to four but got no closer, as the Wildcats pulled away to take the set.

The third set was close early on, but RC went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-4 lead, fueled by the strong serving on Graceon Armstrong. Amherst made several more quality hits to extend the set, but RC finished well, as Hannah Burch ended the match with a kill.

Jaydyn Clemmer led the Wildcats with seven kills and added 10 digs and two aces. Burch had five kills, and she and Kennedy Clemmer combined for 20 assists. Other RC leaders were Armstrong with six kills, two aces and one block; and Jaden Harrison with 10 digs.

Amherst’s leaders were Savannah Keesee with four aces and three kills and Sarah Taylor with 19 digs, 11 assists and three kills.
