Wildcats Fall To Spotswood In Softball, 7-3

Tuesday, April 2 – The Rockbridge County High School softball team suffered a 7-3 loss to Spotswood in Valley District action on Tuesday in Lexington.

The Wildcats (5-3 overall, 1-2 district), coming off a 9-6 home win over Alleghany on Monday, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Madison Ruley put the ball in play Savannah McDaniel scored on a Spotswood error. The Blazers (7-0, 2-0) scored two runs in the third and then two in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1. The young Wildcats struggled to make a few routine plays.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ruley hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Kennedy Clemmer. Spotswood scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to stretch its lead to 7-2. RC’s Jaydyn Clemmer belted a solo home run over the left field fence for the game’s final run in the bottom of the seventh.

McDaniel and Jaydyn Clemmer led the Wildcats with two hits each.

Kennedy Clemmer pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, striking out four and allowing 12 hits and one walk. Pitching all seven innings for Spotswood was Katie Fletcher, striking out eight and permitting nine hits and no walks.

The Wildcats will return to action after spring break with a district game at Broadway on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
