Tuesday, March 13 – On a cold opening night of the high school soccer season, the Rockbridge County girls and boys teams each shut out cross-county rival Parry McCluer on Tuesday at The Fields at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista.

The RC girls earned a 9-0 win, with the second half cut from 40 to 20 minutes due to the eight-goal mercy rule. In the boys match, the Wildcats captured a 4-0 victory.

Maria Vargas led the RC girls with six goals. Adding one goal each for the Wildcats were Molly Hellwig, Hailey Irvine and Sophia Youngdahl. The Wildcats kept the ball in PM territory for nearly the entire match. PM goalkeeper Madison Kirkpatrick made 11 saves. The PM girls had no shots on goal.

The boys match brought the debut of two new head coaches, RC’s Scott Youngdahl and PM’s Chuck Rice, moving up from his position as the Blues’ assistant coach.

The Wildcats scored about seven minutes in when Musa Kamara converted on an assist from Kendrick Messerich. With about 15 minutes left, Bret McClung notched a goal to give RC a 2-0 lead.

About seven minutes into the second half, Ellison Morel took a penalty shot, which PM goalkeeper Blake Funkhouser blocked. Morel recovered the ball quickly, scoring just seconds later. RC’s final goal came in the final minutes of the match when John Elrod scored off a rebound.

Throughout the match, Funkhouser made impressive saves to keep it close. Funkhouser ended up with 19 saves. On the other side, RC’s two goalkeepers each played a half, with Zach Brown making three saves in the first half and Christian Barger collecting a save in the second half.

The Blues will return to action on Thursday when they play host to Glenvar at SVU, starting with the girls match at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys match.

The Wildcats will take on Valley District rival Fort Defiance next Tuesday, with the girls in Lexington and the boys at Fort. The night will start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
