March 10, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: I make a sincere effort to believe in and support the philosophy and culture of the Virginia Military Institute. I married into the family of VMI with a husband, plus four generations of cadets and faculty, serving.
Just about the time VMI appears to move forward, they do something unspeakable again. This time, I reference the failure of the board of visitors to renew the contract of Superintendent General Cedric T. Wins, a man who has served both country and academy with distinction. General Wins has led the cadet corps with purpose, integrity, intelligence, honor, experience, concern, understanding, performance, proof, respect, and The Spirit which is reportedly represented at VMI.
General Wins was released for no justifiable reason. For the lack of grounds, one has to wonder if once again we are disgracefully caught in blatant political manipulation, including appointing two new board members two days before the vote. The board of visitors owes an explanation, apology, and indeed, reinstatement of General Wins. BEVERLY TUCKER Lexington
