March 5, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Like many, I was saddened to learn of the abrupt closure of Lexington Coffee Shop. The continued expansion of university office space into our downtown, as well as VMI’s plans to demolish Cabell Hall and Neikirk House, are alarming threats to our town’s character and livability.
Lexington thrives on its small businesses and historic charm. When downtown commercial space is converted into offices, it displaces local businesses and erodes our tax base, shifting the burden onto residents. Losing the Lexington Coffee Shop is a major blow to our community’s livelihood and unique character.
VMI’s plans to tear down historic Cabell Hall and Neikirk House destroy our town’s architectural heritage. Both buildings have been referred to as “Jewels of Lexington” and once these buildings are gone, they are gone forever. Responsible growth should prioritize preservation, not destruction.
Our town is more than a campus, it is a living community that deserves protection.
I urge residents to voice their concerns to local leaders and university administrators. Let’s preserve Lexington’s history and economy before it’s too late. MARINA WILLIAMS Rockbridge County
