Buena Vista City Council authorized the city school board to proceed with construction of the E.W. Kling Jr. Elementary School. - Lexington City Council took the first step toward a complete rebuilding of the downtown streets and sidewalks. City Manager John Doane said the project would have no effect on the tax bills for city residents. - While Mr. and Mrs. James Dorsey were out of town, a pickup truck pulled up to their house and the truck’s occupants filled the vehicle with furniture from the Dorsey residence. “It’s one of those crazy durn things,” said Lexington Police Chief A.E. Rhodenizer.

Carilion Health System was to acquire 80 percent membership interest in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, under and acquisition agreement that was signed March 11. - Following through on a goal set during the previous year’s budget negotiations, the Buena Vista School Board made raises for teachers and administrators a top priority. The proposed budget included an average raise of 5 percent for teachers. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors agreed to a court decree directing that a planned new courts complex be built at the Southeastern corner of Randolph Street and Nelson Street.
