‘Lucky Loser’ Authors To Speak At W&L

Washington and Lee University welcomes Russ Buettner and Sue Craig, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists from the New York Times, to campus to discuss their recent book, “Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success” on March 25 at 5 p.m. in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons. The talk will be followed by a book signing.

The event, sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and the university’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, is free and open to the public.

In revealing the financial fairy tale behind President Donald Trump’s business and political life, “Lucky Loser” tells the story at the “intersection of business and media, with politics arriving only as a second concern,” according to the New York Times book review.

The book reveals how Trump’s business empire is propped up by the remains of his father’s real estate business, which was transferred through elaborate tax evasion schemes. The book also takes readers behind the scenes of “The Apprentice,” a cash cow, scripted reality television show that required producers to disguise “The Donald’s” incompetence, they say.

“It is a great time to have Russ and Sue come to campus given the Trump administration’s attacks on the media, federal workers and countless others,” said Alecia Swasy, Donald W. Reynolds Chair in Business Journalism. “They had the guts to dig in and reveal the truth behind the façade.”
